Kim Kong.
Steady Hand, Forever Curious.
“It’s the spaces between moments in time- that’s where I learn the most about myself.”
Meet Kim, a Trinidadian-born artist, whose artistic pursuits found its roots in something simple, yet profound- a deep connection with her father. From an early age, Kim observed her father, Raul, an artist and architect, bring his ideas to life by splashing paint onto canvases, and designing urban architecture. She began to see that she, too, could make her ideas a reality. Drawing and painting became a staple in their shared experiences, and walking down a corridor in their family home is to get a feel for the breadth of artwork they’ve both created. She appreciates the smaller, finer details of life, and whilst this had been etched into her from an early age, her art now takes on a life of its own. This can be seen in Kim’s love for fine lines, attention to detail, and also, her love of nature. “True creativity comes from the earth. You can never be as good as nature, but you can be inspired by it and hopefully let it move through you.” Art naturally became the compass unto which she steadied her course- and still does, to this day.
Kim holds a BA in Fine Art and Oil Painting from the College of Saint Benedict Minnesota, and her art has seen her travel abroad, paint murals, delve into graphic design, and create meaningful pieces for people to carry forever, in the form of tattoos. “One of my favourite things about being a tattoo artist is making sure clients feel comfortable and confident in their decision to get inked. Often, it’s symbolic and personal for people, and I get that. Honouring their trust and creating something beautiful, to remind them just how beautiful they themselves are is not only important for me- it’s also a joy to be a part of that process.”
Whether oil and canvas, mural painting, digital illustrations or tattooing, Kim puts intention into her work. Artistic expression, for her, is always something heartfelt, something fun, and something purposeful- with a touch of magic.
